Project for Language Learning through Software: Demonstration of Software in use
Below are examples of how the software can be used with accompanying diagrams.
At start up the program will ask you is you want to connect to an ODBC database or Sql. The database will be set up when you install the program, and the username and password are saved locally for you to re-use without re-entry. The first pages are general wiki pages which the teacher can edit to explain the lessons or the software to the class. Basic introduction pages are already written.
Information on each word can be displayed when you click on a linked word. The amount of informatin depends on what you have in the database. The images will be default for all languages, but can be changed.
Exercises can be listed in an information page and 'Exercise links' made to open the exercise in another window. This window shows images, sound files and a word list for the exercise. These can be edited by the teacher
Teacher's View of Exercise
The teacher sees the list of questions as text, and can edit to put in new images, words in the list, etc. When words are entered in English on the left hand side of the list, the language word is obtained from the database. If the word is not there, the data entry window is shown.
Students View
Now the student had a text edit space to enter their answers. In the present version a simple translation is done on their entry. In the next version a more robust parser will be included.
The teacher can edit the cards and exercise worksheets. When they write a word in English or language they can make it a link. The the student can click on the link to see the word information on that word. If the teacher includes a link to a word, a data entry screen comes up to enable them to enter more information on the word. The image and sound files can then be placed in the audio and images directory for the program to access automatically,
